I loved how engaged the children were and still coming into the nurse’s office at school and talking about the Land of Smiles performance, how funny the characters were, and asked when you all are coming back!
I have had several students report that they are brushing their teeth on a more regular basis after the performance.
These are just a few of the wonderful comments we received from Colorado school nurses after the Land of Smiles program visited their schools this spring. We’re thrilled that the reaction has been so positive.
2014 marks the debut of Land of Smiles oral health theater in Colorado. It’s been performed for more than 10 years in other states, and we were eager to bring it here. The Land of Smiles features the Tooth Wizard and his arch enemy, Plaque Man. They teach the value and practice of brushing, flossing, and eating healthy food.
Land of Smiles could be called a live action cartoon. Our hero, Tooth Wizard, shows kids how to stop Plaque Man from “plaquing up” the place. Plaque Man promotes lollipops and cake all day long — but Tooth Wizard, with the help of all of the kids, shouts down those bad tips. Instead, the children learn about brushing, flossing, using mouthwash, and visiting their best friend, the dentist.
Through Land of Smiles, Delta Dental of Colorado hopes to increase awareness about the importance of oral health, increase oral health literacy, and help our children lead lives free from painful tooth decay. When we hear, “The students loved the interaction with the characters, and the level of engagement was extraordinary,” we know this program is working.
We currently have a waiting list for 2015 performances, but if your child’s school would be interested in getting on it, email [email protected].
