From Sports Cars to Surgeries: 4 Midlife Crisis Stereotypes We Love

May 12, 2015 By Shelby Tatomir

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase, “midlife crisis”?

Although there’s no real definition, there are several events that commonly occur at midlife. You might not be at or past the midpoint of your life yet, but one thing is certain: Activities that contribute to a healthy mouth should start decades beforehand. So when it comes to your smile, we think you should aim to experience aging stereotypes.

Here are 4 mid-life crisis behaviors that will benefit your smile for years to come:

     1. See someone special.

Regular dental visits can help you avoid tooth decay and catch other mouth problems before they start. Dental exams are just as important for adults as they are for children. In fact, older adults are particularly vulnerable to tooth decay. So make a date with your dentist at least 2 times a year. You won’t be able to stop smiling!

     2. Go on a shopping spree.

As you age, your mouth can experience changes. Dental health issues, such as dentures and tooth sensitivity, often arise later in life. So replenish your pearly white supplies with some smile-inspired retail therapy. Fortunately, there are more than 300 ADA-approved pastes, brushes, and rinses available on store shelves. Consult your dentist to see which products are right for you.

     3. Binge drink.

Don’t turn your midlife crisis into a mid-day glass of wine. Hit the H2O happy hour instead! Water hydrates more than your body; it helps your smile, too! Water stimulates saliva flow, which rinses away food particles and decreases your chance for tooth decay. Additionally, many adults are on medications that can contribute to dry mouth, which makes hydration extra important.

     4. Get implants.

Implants are a good option for adults of many ages. Dental implants, that is. Typically made with titanium, implants are used to replace broken or missing adult teeth. Unlike their silicone, cosmetic counterpart, dental implants are lightweight and strong. If you have a damaged tooth, ask your dentist if you’re a candidate for an implant.

Here’s to a happy and healthy midpoint.
