We asked our leadership questions about their theories on leadership. Check out the past tips from Terry Robinson and Jean Lawhead.
We’re continuing our profiles on leadership series with Lisa Konen, Social Media Director and Community Benefit Communications Director.
Do you think it’s important to fail? Why or why not.
I don’t think you can truly grow in your leadership skills without failing. If you never make a bad choice — maybe you always make the “safe” choice — you won’t grow. Perhaps you made a hire who isn’t working out too well. So going through the analysis of that: Is the person not a good fit for the company culture, did they not understand the job, or did you just not explain things very well? All of that will force internal growth, as will the encouragement dedicated toward that hire or disciplinary talks. If you can get this “rotten egg” to change to a golden egg — what a moment! And, likewise, if they don’t change, then there are other things to learn as well.
What keeps you positive and motivated on a daily basis?
I work for a nonprofit, Delta Dental of Colorado, and interact with our mission on a daily basis. That keeps me motivated — knowing that we are making a difference in the community about improving oral health.
