Delta Dental Profiles in Leadership: Tips, Tricks and Productivity Hacks to Improve Your Leadership

December 2, 2015 By Shelby Tatomir

There are many books, inspirations posters and quotes on leadership. Perhaps we’re continually looking for advice from others because leadership does not always come naturally and when it does, it can be very difficult. To explore some thoughts on leadership, we invited our fantastic team here at Delta Dental of Colorado to share some insight.

We asked our leadership questions about their theories on leadership. And over the next couple weeks, we’ll bring you their thoughts.

First up, Terry Robinson – Claims and Customer Service Manager.

Terry Robinson, Claims and Customer Service ManagerHas a person had a tremendous impact on you as a leader or mentor? Tell us how they impacted your career or life.

Yes, my boss. He has been an inspiration to me as a leader and mentor. He makes himself available without pressure, and assists me without being judgmental. He is business savvy but trustworthy. I feel safe under his tutelage. I know that I can take risks and still be supported if I fail.

What is your leadership style and how do you think it has worked best for you?

Make sure that staff is fully trained and resources made available. I try to lead based on the fact that I’m an adult and you’re an adult, and if we both do our jobs we will be successful without getting into each other’s way. I do NOT believe in micro-managing unless absolutely necessary. I find it to be an incredibly exhausting and disrespectful way to do one’s job.

What’s one lesson you learned the hard way that you will never forget?

Never blur the lines about which rules to apply to which people. Rules must be applied to everyone equally or there can be very unhappy results and conflicts.

Do you think it’s important to fail? Why or why not.

Yes – sometimes it’s the best way to learn a lesson and remember it.
