3 Crucial Safety Tips for Future Soccer Stars

April 14, 2016 By Shelby Tatomir

Future soccer stars need to protect their smiles!

Watch out, baseball! Americans are finally appreciating the “world’s sport” like other countries. Soccer is quickly becoming one of America’s favorite sports. And Colorado is a hot bed with some of the most memorable matches for the US team and, of course, our very own MLS team, the Colorado Rapids!

As the fan base for professional soccer grows, so will the sport’s players. Youth soccer is now the second-most popular sport in the country, behind basketball.

Prep your soccer stars for youth leagues with these 3 teeth tips:

1. Bring a surplus of water.

The average midfielder runs 7 miles during a match. Obviously, this varies based on the position and age, but the kids are going to be thirsty. Bring several refillable water bottles and have them ready for the match.

Pro Tip: Drinking tap water suits your teeth because it includes fluoride. And steer clear of juice, energy and sports drinks, and soda—they contain a lot of sugar that your little star can do without!

2. Encourage mouthguard use.

Mouthguards are not required, but they can prevent some serious injuries. Young athletes are 60 times more likely to damage teeth when not wearing a mouthguard. Mouthguards are highly recommended for goalies and those likely to make facial contact with the ball.

Pro Tip: Mouthguards come in several styles. Let kiddos express themselves with their own color choices.

3. Foster friendships.

Sports are about a lot more than physical exercise and college scholarships. Playing on a team helps kids learn teamwork and improves social skills. Most youth players are not going to be the next Jermaine Jones or Tobin Heath, but they can still benefit from team sports.

Pro Tip: Once your kiddo is on the team, invite teammates and parents over for a pre-game shindig.
