TRICARE Retiree Dental Program *
The TRICARE Retiree Dental Program provides military dental benefits for retirees thanks to a contract between the United States Department of Defense and the Federal Services division of Delta Dental Plan. There are more than 200,000 participating provider locations.
Benefits include:
- Preventive treatments and screenings
- Restorative services
- Endodontics, orthodontics, and periodontics
- Dentures
*Note: Beginning on Jan. 1, 2019, the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program will be replaced by the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP).
Veterans Affairs Health Benefits
The United States Department of Veteran Affairs offers health benefits to veterans meeting the organization’s eligibility requirements.
Benefits include:
- Cleanings and X-rays
- Restorative procedures
- Dentures
- Oral surgery
- Access to oral and facial reconstruction surgery
Some services require separate eligibilities.
Additionally, the Department of Veterans affairs offers discounted dental insurance to members who don’t quality for VA benefits.

The nonprofit Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States offers a variety of services, including military dental benefits for retirees.
Medicaid
The Medicaid program provides financial assistance with health costs for low-income individuals, and benefits vary by state.
Local Events
Many local dental offices and schools offer low-cost resources for services, and areas often host events for veterans and their families. One annual event is Freedom Day USA, during which area dentists team up to offer free dental services for active military members and veterans and the families of both.
