Not everyone is served by the traditional dental insurance system. One out of three Coloradans lack dental insurance. Some can’t afford insurance; others face geographic barriers to care that make it hard to choose to pay for coverage. Some simply don’t prioritize dental care.
Still, everyone deserves the chance to have good oral health. Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation believes oral health equity is when every person can have a healthy mouth no matter what is happening in their life. We partner with communities to help us reimagine how all of our neighbors access, benefit from, and value the importance of proper oral health care.
By providing grants to community-based organizations, patients like Fred get the care they need and an improved quality of life, even if they lack dental insurance. Fred was a bus driver for 13 years and recently lost his health benefits after retirement. He had been putting off his dental needs and mouth pain for many years, choosing instead to cover costs for his family.
Mission Medical, a clinic in Colorado Springs that provides free health and dental care, serves people like Fred who can’t afford insurance or make too much to qualify for Medicaid. The clinic was able to purchase equipment and supplies that allow volunteer dentists to serve a larger patient population through a Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation grant.
Fred learned about Mission Medical from a friend in a similar situation. Now, through Mission Medical’s accessible services, Fred has had several teeth pulled and is taking care of his natural teeth through follow-up care.
