Can Gum Disease Be Reversed?

July 29, 2025 By Social Media Collaborative

Person holding their jaw in pain.

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a common oral health problem that affects nearly half of the adult population in the United States. A diagnosis can feel intimidating, and many people wonder, “Can gum disease be reversed?”

The good news is that, when identified in its early stages, gum disease can often be reversed along with many of its adverse effects. Better yet, preventing the disease altogether is achievable with proper oral hygiene practices and regular visits with your dentist.

What is gum disease?

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, “Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It’s typically caused by poor brushing and flossing habits that allow plaque — a sticky film of bacteria — to build up on the teeth and harden.”

When dental plaque hardens, it transforms into a substance known as tartar. Unlike plaque, tartar cannot be removed with regular brushing or flossing and requires professional dental intervention. If left untreated, tartar buildup can contribute to the development of gum disease.

Gum disease is typically diagnosed by dental professionals and, in its early stages, is marked by symptoms such as red, swollen, and tender gums. If the condition progresses without treatment, it can result in loose teeth or even bone loss.

Can gum disease be reversed?

Whether or not gum disease can be reversed depends on many factors, with the stage at which it is diagnosed being one of the most critical.

Gum disease in its earliest stage is known as gingivitis. Gingivitis is characterized by gums that are red, swollen, and may bleed when you floss or brush. However, there is no impact on bone at this stage, making it easier to reverse.

Treatments such as scaling and root planning, specialized mouth rinses, and improved oral hygiene practices can help reverse gingivitis. It’s also vital to quit smoking and using any tobacco products, and limit foods and drinks with excess sugar to stop disease progression.

Even if you successfully reverse your gingivitis diagnosis, it’s important to continue to practice a good oral hygiene routine and see your dentist regularly as it can recur and become irreversible without treatment.

Can gum disease be reversed at later stages?

If left untreated, gingivitis can advance to a more severe condition known as periodontitis, which is a more damaging stage of gum disease.

If you’re wondering if gum disease can be reversed once it has progressed to periodontitis, the answer is probably not. Once the infection has spread beneath your gums, a successful reversal is highly unlikely. This is because the bacteria have spread to the tissues and bone that support your teeth, causing inflammation and damage.

In its early stages, periodontitis can cause pockets to form around your teeth, making it easier for bacteria and plaque to become trapped. As it progresses, the buildup can impact the bone, tissue, and connective ligaments that hold your teeth in place. You may see pus around the gum line and experience bad breath, indicating an infection. In its advanced stage, periodontitis can cause tooth loss and bone loss.

Once gum disease has progressed to this stage, invasive procedures may be required to prevent further damage. You will likely be referred to a periodontist or a dental professional who specializes in gum and jawbone health.

Your periodontist may recommend treatments such as dental bone graft surgery, osseous surgery, gum grafts, and platelet-rich plasma.

Can gum disease be reversed? Not always, but it can be prevented!

Although gum disease cannot always be reversed, it can be prevented! The American Academy of Periodontology recommends following good oral hygiene habits, such as flossing and brushing your teeth, rinsing with mouthwash to remove any leftover food particles, and understanding your personal risk of developing the disease.

Going to regular dental check-ups for professional cleanings also helps prevent gum disease.

Gum disease prevention starts at home!

Preventing gum disease before it starts ensures you will never need to ask yourself, “Can gum disease be reversed?” Taking the time to care for your teeth and gums every day is the first step in stopping the disease!

If you think you may have gum disease, it’s important to schedule an appointment with your dentist for evaluation. Delta Dental of Colorado makes it easy to find a provider with our online tool.
