“Live long and prosper.” Even those of us who are not Trekkies have heard the famous Vulcan quote.
I think Mr. Spock had the right idea. Who doesn’t want to live a long and prosper, right? The good news is that if you take charge of your life now, you can fulfill the Vulcan legacy.
There are plenty of simple things you can do to live longer. If you incorporate these 4 ideas into your daily life your body will last longer and you will lead a more prosperous life.
- Get plenty of sleep every night – the average adult needs 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night. Not getting the proper amount of rest makes it harder to focus, remember, and react. Also, not getting enough sleep increases your risk for many chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Lack of sleep can even double you risk of getting certain cancers.
- Eat a healthy diet – Follow the new “food plate” recommended by the USDA to make maintaining your diet easier. The food plate will help you understand which foods are better for you and which you should not have as often. A healthy diet is a major key to having a healthy body. The healthier your body is the longer it will last you. A copy of the food plate can be found here.
- Exercise at least 30 minutes a day most days of the week – Moderate exercise can include a fast walk, household chores, playing with your kids outside, or even taking the stairs a few times. We have all heard the saying “you’re only as young as you feel” and by staying active now, you will help keep your body feeling and looking great in years to come.
- Keep a regular oral hygiene routine – A clean healthy mouth is beneficial to us in more ways than one. Brush your teeth at least twice and floss daily. A regular routine will reduce your risk of getting gum disease, which has been linked to heart disease and strokes. Also, having a clean, healthy mouth makes us feel better about ourselves!
Now go out and make Mr. Spock proud!
